![]() I personally know a woman who's mostly self taught and has literally done numerous kinds of hobbies and jobs in her relatively short life. Hell, in the first ten minutes of the first episode he literally tells Marty that what he just spoke about he learned from a criminal psych book. That right there is enough to inform the watcher that he's self taught. You don't have to go to college to gain that knowledge, you just have to be dedicated to intensive study and learning how to research a topic.Īs for him reading books, as it was pointed out by someone else Rust has piles of books relating to various topics in his apartment. However, it's not hard to acquire a wide variety of information on topics. Nietzsche is great, but if you wanna talk about operating inside a tiny box, try debating Nietzsche fanboys about any practical application of his writing and you'll be as pissed as Marty in the car in about three minutes.įor one thing, the story needs a character like him to dissect the information and lead the watcher on. Rust's wife and kid died, he read some Nietzsche, went "yeah that's about right," and built a worldview around it. Marty is a hedonist, and Rust pretends (unevenly) to be a nihilist until the end of the last episode. In terms of normal-people psychology, Rust has no idea what makes people tick and doesn't particularly seem to care. In terms of criminal psychology, I'll readily concede Rust is an expert compared to Marty-evidenced by what Rust says and the books at his house. Marty has a much better understanding of normal people than Rust does, Rust has a deeper understanding of abnormal people than Marty does, and thus they make an excellent team. You CAN compare their understandings of philosophy and psychology. That's not a reflection of intellectual capacity, but rather an intellectual weakness in my humble opinion. His emotional blind-spots make it so that he's constantly isolated from everyone. He doesn't even have a dysfunctional family like Marty, expensive toys like 's implied he doesn't know how to furnish a house, and that he's paying for an entire second floor he doesn't use. Outside of his job, Rust has literally nothing. There is plenty of time in the off-season for memes, but only a short window for discussion when the episodes are new. This is to give room for discussion to take place.
